When he was president of the Briarbrook and Morgan's Grant Community Association he led a successful fight against graffiti, hosted two Multicultural Festivals, multiple Winter Family Fun Days, and multiple Summer Festivals. He also hosted many community meetings to address a wide range of issues - from crime, to transportation, to pushing for the Terry Fox Drive extension to be built.

He is currently the president of the Kanata Lakes Community Association, and he continues to organize community-building events, as well as standing up for Kanata North on issues that range from fighting a tax levy on Kanata North, to demanding that Kanata be included in the City's Light Rail plans.

Matt was instrumental in uniting the three community associations of Kanata North under one banner. Briarbrook & Morgan's Grant, Beaverbrook, and Kanata Lakes united to form the Kanata North Council of Community Associations. As a larger organization, the KNCCA was able to fight for better planning practices in each neighbourhood of Kanata North.

Matt has received, and been nominated for, many awards for his community activism. He was awarded the Mayor's Agent of Change Medallion by former Mayor Larry O'Brien. He received a Civic Appreciation certificate from the City of Ottawa, and Matt was recently nominated for Adult Citizen of the Year in the Kanata North awards.

There are still many ways that Matt wants to bring his unique skill-set to Ottawa's city hall. Please give him your support on October 27th, 2014, and let's make Kanata North even better!MJMuirheadnoreply@blogger.com
